As long as you stick to a few basic principles, you'll be warm, dry, and comfortable on the slopes this winter.
| | | | | | Here's What to Pack for Every Ski Trip | On a recent trip to Club Med Val-d'Isère in the French Alps, I decided to take a ski lesson. I had skied a total of three times before—each attempt at least a year apart—but this was my first time getting real instruction. I showed up on the slopes, where I met my French instructor, François. He immediately pointed out that I wasn't wearing gloves. I had forgotten to pack them. "Have you even heard of winter sports?" he asked me. He handed me a spare pair that he kept in his backpack. At least a friend back home had let me borrow her ski pants. "Real tourist aren't you?" After a few runs down the slope, I still struggled getting on the magic carpet. "Why is this the hardest part?" I asked. François was quick with the reply: "You didn't bring the two things you need for skiing: gloves and muscle." Teasing aside, François was a great instructor, and I really improved during our session. At some point, I just started laughing along with him—so not only did I learn to ski, I learned about the French sense of humor. But if you don't want to be a "real tourist" like me, then get yourself some warm ski pants, a good pair of gloves, and maybe a lower body workout. The last one is optional, but François would approve! | | | Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products and services; you can learn more about our review process here.
