Joshua Tree National Park

When viewed from afar, Joshua Tree National Park seems like a long stretch of quiet desert. In fact, many visitors are surprised to find that the park is full of vitality. While the park is full of history and amazing geology, springtime brings out the best of the best, with the trees that gave the park its name beginning to bloom during late February. Once April and May roll around, the cacti are bursting with bright flowers. Spring is also the time to see the migrating birds that join the ones who live here year-round, like perky cactus wrens, roadrunners, and Gambel's quail.

Best Hikes & Trails

The meeting point of two deserts, the Mojave and the Colorado, this park includes roughly 300 miles of trails that come in a variety of lengths and difficulty levels. Along the trails, you'll see the park's namesake Dr. Seussian vegetation, piles of massive boulders, arches, craggy canyons, old gold mines, spiky cactuses, and views of faultlines and snow-capped mountains. Some feature spectacular wildflower displays while others attract creatures like roadrunners, desert bighorn sheep, and common chuckwallas.

Rock Climbing

Joshua Tree's granite rock formations make it a world-class spot for climbers and bouldering enthusiasts. In all, the park has more than 400 climbing formations and 8,000 climbing routes suitable for all levels of ability. Before climbing in Joshua Tree, check out the rules and regulations; novice climbers should venture out only with a permitted local guide.

Where to Camp

Joshua Tree has nearly 500 campsites spread across nine campgrounds. You'll find RV-compatible spaces and dump stations, but no hookups exist in this park. Some campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, but you can reserve others from September through the end of May. Make reservations online up to six months in advance.

Vacation Like a Pro

Be wary of tours from Palm Springs that say they go to Joshua Tree. Some may only give you a peek at the edge of the park. Ask questions before you commit, so you're not disappointed.

In the spring, average temperatures reach as high as 85 degrees in the afternoon, and the UV index is high; be sure to bring a wide-brimed hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

Pack every hiking gear essential, including a sturdy pair of hiking boots.

There are no concessions inside the park, so stock up on food and water—about one to two gallons per person per day—before you arrive. You can find grocery stores and restaurants in Palm Springs, as well as in the towns of Desert Hot Springs, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms.

Due to the desert climate, breathable, light-colored clothing is key.
