The largest city in Kentucky by land, and second-largest by population, Lexington has a long fascinating history that gives it a uniquely American personality. Foodies, sports fans, history buffs, and liquor enthusiasts alike will be impressed with Lexington's offerings.
Explore the 'Horse Capital of the World'
Often referred to as the Horse Capital of the World, Lexington is home to more than 400 horse farms and has bred more Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winners than anywhere else in the world. Visit the 1,229-acre Kentucky Horse Park or Keeneland Race Course, horse country's premier thoroughbred auction house, and one of the most enjoyable (and classy) places to catch a race anywhere in the country. Thoroughbreds at Keeneland race during the fall and spring (October and April), but you can tour the facilities year-round, or attend one of Keeneland's many seasonal events.
Drink Your Way Through the Bourbon Trail
People from all over come to experience the famous Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and Lexington is an excellent place to sample the local liquor. In Lexington alone, you can find 15 distilleries. There are historic brands including Woodford Reserve as well as new distillers like Castle and Key, Lexington's first female-led distillery, giving a fresh take on this American classic.
Tour a Historic Home
Although you'll find a few traditional museums to visit, many of the best museums in Lexington tend to be historic houses once occupied by distinguished people. History buffs can explore Mary Todd Lincoln's childhood home, which today features a collection of art and period pieces, as well as detailed information on the history of the Todd and Lincoln families. Other historic houses of note in the neighborhood are Henry Clay's impressive Ashland Estate and Waveland mansion.
Your Packing List
With highs in the 80s F, September feels more like a summer month. You'll want some extra changes of lightweight clothing along with sun protection.
For those visiting Keeneland in October, plan to pack "smart casual" clothing: You will need to be dressed appropriately to enter the clubhouse and other special areas.
Although some of the most impressive hiking in Kentucky can be found in Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest, Lexington and the surrounding area are also home to a few nice trails. If interested, bring your favorite pair of hiking boots, along with a daypack, first-aid kit, and water bottle.
A quaint fishing village just half an hour down the coast from San Sebastian, Getaria has made a name for itself in recent years as one of the top day trip destinations in the Basque Country. The town is home to some of the best local gastronomy in the region, with freshly caught Atlantic anchovies and crisp txakoli wine staples of the local diet. And if you're into fashion, don't miss the Balenciaga Museum—the famous fashion designer hailed from Getaria.
