Empty Your Cup
There is an old Chinese story about a boy who visits a Kung Fu master in hopes of becoming his student.
Back in those days, it wasn't as simple as signing up for lessons. You had to prove your patience, humility, and desire.
Tradition required that you sit in front of the master's house for days, silently waiting until he acknowledged you.
So the boy waits.
One day. Two days. Three days.
Sitting quietly, determined not to move.
Finally, the master comes out and looks at him.
"What do you want?"
"Master," the boy says, "I have been practicing Kung Fu for 10 years. I would like to become your student and continue my training under you."
The master nods slowly, then gestures for him to come inside.
The Test
"How much Kung Fu do you know?" the master asks.
The boy sits up proudly. He begins reciting all the moves, all the forms, every style he has studied. He speaks for minutes on end, listing every skill he's practiced.
The master listens without interruption, nodding along.
Finally, when the boy finishes, the master says: "Good. I will teach you Kung Fu. But first, you must pass a test."
The boy's heart pounds. This is the moment he's been waiting for. He pictures himself showing off his leopard style, his crane stance, his tiger claw. His palms sweat.
Then the master picks up a teapot. He pours hot tea into a cup. The boy watches as the liquid rises… to the brim… and then the master keeps pouring.
Tea spills over the sides of the cup, pooling onto the table.
The master sets the teapot down.
"If you can pour more tea into this cup without letting it overflow, then you will pass the test."
The boy stares in disbelief. "Master, that's impossible. The cup is already full. Even one more drop will spill over."
The master looks at him calmly.
"Exactly. Your mind is like this cup—already full of knowledge. If you want me to teach you anything new, you must first empty your cup."
The Lesson
The story carries a simple, but profound truth:
Sometimes we're so full of stress, information, and routine that there's no room left for clarity, focus, or growth.
Our modern lives are no different from the boy's overfilled teacup.
We pack our days with to-do lists, worries, and noise. Our minds overflow until we can't see solutions clearly.
To learn, to grow, and to move forward, we first need to pause… breathe… and empty our cup.
That's where tea becomes more than just a drink.
At Herbaly, we've crafted Functional Teas that aren't only about flavour—they're about creating space in your day to slow down, reset, and find balance again.
