John would be astonished at how the company has grown from those first accounts at the Ritz in Boston and the Waldorf in New York. John often said how fortunate he was to learn from remarkable tea experts. Stanley Mason was a third-generation English tea taster in Salisbury who helped John with his early understanding of fine tea. Later, he connected with Norwood Pratt, who was another authority on tea. He always credited the support of our family, especially our sons Michael and Paul, for giving him the freedom to begin a whole new career at age fifty. One of my favorite memories is when we received the call from the Historic Royal Palaces in England. John truly thought one of his Cornell friends was teasing him. It took several calls to get his attention, and even Michael and Paul weren't quite convinced it was real. But before we knew it, we were in England, being admitted by the guards at Hampton Court to finalize our partnership. That time remains one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.
