What would it take for you to relinquish your seat?
Destination of the Day
Australia's Northern Territory
The Northern Territory is home to Australia's most recognizable landmark: the 1,142 foot-tall red rock Uluru. But for visitors willing to travel even further afield, this vast and sparsely populated region offers plenty to see and do. At Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park, hiking trails, waterfalls, and unparalleled views await. The town of Alice Springs is the heart of Central Australia, and is known for incredible hiking in the nearby MacDonnell Ranges as well as Aboriginal art, which can be seen at the Araluen Cultural Precinct and many community arts centers. Meanwhile, the capital of Darwin offers laid-back living in the Tropics in addition to World War II historical sites and the world's largest display of Australian reptiles. This region rewards slow travel, so take your time getting to know its unique cultures and landscapes.
Your Packing List
The ideal time to visit the region's national parks is between April and October. We recommend comfortable enclosed shoes for outdoor activities, as well as a jacket or sweater for after dark. If you're camping in the Red Centre region (where Uluru and Alice Springs reside), you'll need a sleeping bag rated to at least 30 degrees F.
In the Northern Territory, the spring season runs from September to November. If you're visiting the Top End, home to Darwin and Kakadu National Park, be prepared for wet weather with waterproof footwear and a rain jacket. In the Red Centre, you'll need to dress for a wide range of temperatures with loose layers.
With all the outdoorsy adventures you'll embark on, you'll want a checked bag that can carry all your essentials. TravelPro's Platinum Elite Softside Expandable Spinner received high scores across the board when we put it to the test. At first glance, we loved the simple design of the black bag, and upon opening it up, we appreciated the many organization features, such as the diversity and quantity of pockets to keep things organized, a built-in suiter, a TSA-friendly 3-1-1 bag for liquids, and compression straps. Once packed, it also maneuvered really well, practically gliding along smooth and rougher surfaces.
As one of the largest sand deserts in the world, Rub' al Khali (the Empty Quarter) is a sight to behold for anyone visiting Oman. It is located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula and also covers portions of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. It houses a host of exciting wildlife such as oryx, reptiles, and birds. The Ramlat Duhayth portion of Rub' al Khali is home to massive sand dunes that adventurous travelers enjoy zipping up and down in 4X4 trucks on tours to the region.
