Destination of the Day
Taipei, Taiwan
Like a gentle and friendly lovechild of Hong Kong and Japan, Taipei combines some of the best elements of those destinations—a juxtaposition of skyscrapers and majestic greenery, amazing sushi, natural hot springs, efficient subway lines, bustling districts, and side streets packed with hidden gems. But, Taiwan's capital also has its own distinct identity. Explore Taipei's rich history by diving into one of its many museums, including the National Taiwan Museum, the oldest in the country. Or, head up to the top of the 1,667-foot Taipei 101 tower for panoramic city views from the 89th floor.
Taipei is already a lively metropolis in the daytime, but when the sun sets, the city is even more exciting. While Taipei's world-class culinary scene boasts a growing wave of game-changing chefs, those on a budget should hit up Taiwan's night markets, which provide miles of street stalls serving savory and sweet snacks.
Come fall, it will be warm enough for shorts many days, but some long pants are a good idea—especially if you're doing anything formal or planning to visit Buddhist temples and holy sites. A light jacket and umbrella are wise additions, and swimwear for beaches and hotel pools. If you're into hiking, this is a great time of year for that, so bring hiking-friendly clothing and footwear, too.
Appropriate dress and footwear are required to visit Taipei 101's observatories—don't wear flip-flops!
Named for the king of Maui himself, Kahekili's Leap is the exact spot where the sport of cliff diving reportedly began back in the 1770s. Today, adrenaline junkies still make the pilgrimage to this spot—located on Lanai in Hawaii—to follow in Kahekili's footsteps.
