Destination of the Day
Kigali, Rwanda
Established as the capital after Rwanda gained independence from Belgium in 1962, Kigali is located roughly at the country's geographical center, making it a natural gateway for visitors and an excellent base for exploring Rwanda's best attractions. If you have time, plan to spend at least a few days in the city itself rather than simply passing through. Learn about the Rwandan Genocide by visiting one of Kigali's many museums and memorials that exist to commemorate its victims, wander around Niyo Art Gallery to see the best of Kigali's flourishing contemporary art scene, and partake in the city's impressive restaurant scene. When you're ready to explore more of the country, popular sites—including Volcanoes National Park and the genocide memorials of Ntarama and Nyamata—are within reach.
Your Packing List
If your trip is during the long dry season (June to mid-September), pack layers—including thin, long-sleeved shirts and pants—for protection against the sun and biting insects.
The short rainy season lasts from October to November in most parts of Rwanda and generally sees less precipitation than the long rainy season. Layers will also be your friend this season. Bring long-sleeved shirts and pants that can dry quickly in between rain showers. Warm sweaters and coats will get you through chilly evenings.
Sturdy hiking boots and malaria medication are essential all year round.
The Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world, and at its heart lies the Sossusvlei dune sea. Here, ocher dunes rise in spectacular star-shaped peaks, outlined against the azure sky. Staying at Sesriem Camp (located within the park gates) affords you early access to the dunes—a major benefit for anyone wanting to climb to the top of iconic peak Dune 45 in time for sunrise.
