Destination of the Day
Auckland, New Zealand
Located towards the top of the North Island, New Zealand's largest city is a convenient jumping-off point for travels around the island. More than this, however, Auckland is a lively and naturally beautiful city that offers plenty of attractions for any kind of traveler. If you're into good food and buzzing nightlife, you'll find it here. Alternatively, if you prefer the outdoors, you can swim in the sea, sail around Waitemata Harbour, hike up a volcano on nearby Rangitoto Island, or bungee jump off Auckland Harbor Bridge.
As Auckland is large, there's a variety of accommodation options all over the city. Most travelers will find staying on or around Queen Street the most convenient option. From here, you'll find that public transportation and many attractions are within walking distance.
Your Packing List
New Zealand experiences its spring from September through November, and the weather this time of year can be quite variable. Given the season's unpredictability, you'll want to pack clothing prepared for all sorts of weather. Layers in the form of long-sleeve T-shirts, sweaters, and a pullover or jacket are always a good idea, as is an umbrella.
For those using Auckland as a jumping off point to explore the rest of the country, you'll defintely want a suitcase large enough to fit all your essentials. Amazon Basics' 26-inch Hardside Spinner Luggage can easily fit more than a week's worth of clothing inside, and it also has an expander that adds 2 inches to the depth. Maneuvering the bag is easy, and, at $98, it's easy on the wallet.
The story of Belize's Great Blue Hole is complicated, and requires a great deal of historical perspective—specifically, about 150,000 years' worth! The hole has been formed gradually over time, and features several concentric ledges, bottoming out somewhere around 400 feet beneath the surface. Of course, geology will be the last thing on your mind as you approach the Great Blue Hole, which sits about 45 miles off the coast of mainland Belize in the Lighthouse Reef Formation. Instead, you'll be astounded by just how blue these waters are!
