In addition to supplying water from the country's deep water tables, India's abandoned step wells have been used as temples, community centers, and layovers on trade routes for centuries. Rani ki Vav (the Queen's Step Well) in Patan, Gujarat is undoubtedly India's most awe-inspiring step well. Designed as an inverted temple, this UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 11th century, during the reign of the Solanki dynasty, and features more than 500 main sculptures and 1,000 minor ones.
