When you're in the middle of it—whatever "it" is—it feels endless. It's brutal. You're in pain. You think: This will never end. I'm broken. I have to quit.

But there's a reason I implore you to take the hard way. It's because nothing stays hard forever.

It feels like the storm will rage on forever, but the reality is, it'll be over before you know it. Hard things always come to an end, one way or another.

You've seen that image: Someone digging through a tunnel, inches from breaking through, and they quit. That's where most people give up. Right before the finish line.

I've been there.

The first time I ran a marathon, I decided to trick myself into thinking the finish line was much closer than it was.

As I dragged myself to the next made-up goalpost — a tree, a rock, a bridge — I realized I could survive another mile.

The race did eventually end, and I collapsed at the finish line. But after, I realized I could go 30 miles, or even 50!

I'll tell you a secret: Wherever you move the goal post is where you'll collapse.

So if you take anything away from this story, let it be this:
  1. Lie to yourself. The struggle will end. Tell yourself whatever you need to get through it.
  2. Embrace the struggle. It's the longest part. It's the part you hate when you're going through it. But at the end, it's the magic that's the fun part.
  3. Know Your Strength. We are much more powerful, and much more capable, than we believe.

Follow This Rule to Get Faster

Spring training is underway and you're chasing speed this season—but if you want to crush your next goal, speed alone won't cut it. The real edge? Explosive power.

Add these five movements to your training plan to level up your strength, agility, and obstacle domination. We broke down how to nail each one—check out our tips here.

  1. Kettlebell deadlift to box jump
  2. Dumbbell clean to reverse lunge
  3. Lateral box jump
  4. Explosive kneeling to standing box jump
  5. Lateral bound to bear crawl

You Ask, Joe Answers
Q: Hey Joe, How do you transition from accomplishing a multi-year goal to working on the next big goal without losing momentum? I completed my first Ultra last year, and am now finding it hard to train.
- Vincent A.

A: Hey Vincent, motivation is a lie. Stop waiting to feel ready. Just start. Action leads to momentum. The first step is the hardest—after that, it's just motion.
