The AI buildout is creating winners across several key industries, including computing, power machinery, and software. Notably, after strong recent performance, three top names across these spaces just saw large bouts of insider selling, totaling over $450 million.
This pattern of sizable gains followed by large sales can signal negative insider sentiment going forward. However, this is not inherently true, making it important to dissect insider sales to decipher what they really mean.
NVIDIA Sees Over $350 Million in Sales After Earnings Surge
While NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) needs no introduction, the company recently achieved something it hasn’t in quite a long time. After its latest earnings report, NVIDIA shares soared 8.7%.
This marked the first time the stock has risen after earnings in more than a year and was NVIDIA’s largest post-earnings gain in over two years.
This came as the company guided for 70% growth in its next fiscal year, substantially higher than consensus estimates. The stock is up approximately 20% in 2026, solidly beating out the S&P 500’s 11% gain.
The stock has recently seen some hefty insider sales on the heels of this rally. Since NVIDIA’s report, $385 million worth of sales have been reported. Of this, the vast majority came from director Mark Stevens. Stevens's sales did not come under a 10b5-1 plan, indicating they were discretionary. However, Stevens still holds nearly 29 million NVIDIA shares, so these sales represent a bit less than 10% of his total position.
Overall, these sales are a somewhat negative indicator, but are not overly worrisome. They come primarily from one individual and represent only a moderate trim to his position. A more troubling situation would be one where many insiders were selling large percentages of their holdings.
Caterpillar CEO Sells, Realizing Big-Time Profits
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) has been another substantial beneficiary of the AI buildout. This comes as the company has attracted significant demand for its reciprocating engines, turbines, and diesel generation sets. Data center operators often employ these machines to provide backup power to their facilities, and Caterpillar is also seeing opportunities to provide primary power.
In its latest quarter, Caterpillar’s power generation business grew 72% year-over-year. On the year, Caterpillar’s data center success has helped the stock deliver returns of about 40%. This comes despite CAT dropping more than 20% from its highs.
CEO Joseph Creed recently sold more than $26 million worth of CAT shares. These sales did not come under a 10b5-1 plan and represented a very large percentage of Creed’s holdings.
Creed exercised options for 44,404 shares. After over 12,000 shares were used to pay his exercise price and tax liability, he sold the remainder.
This lowered his combined direct and indirect ownership by over 45%.
Creed generated a massive return from these options, exercising near $220 and selling at over $800. It's difficult to fault him for turning these gains into cash. Realizing these substantial profits was likely the motivating factor in Creed’s decision, rather than his view of CAT’s outlook. Nonetheless, this large sale is difficult to fully ignore, implying that Caterpillar’s CEO may see more limited upside ahead.
Elastic Soars as AI Products Gain Traction; Insider Sales Shoot Above $70 Million
Last up is cybersecurity company Elastic (NYSE: ESTC), which has seen significant demand for its AI offerings. In its latest earnings report, the company noted that 37% of its over $100,000 annual contract value (ACV) customers now use Elastic for AI.
This is up significantly from 21% a year ago, with more than 670 customers now using the product. Furthermore, the company says that customers who have adopted its AI solutions have a higher growth propensity compared to non-AI customers.
Overall, Elastic added more than 80 new customers to its over $100,000 ACV cohort, its largest sequential net addition ever. It attributes much of its success to AI adoption, with shares up around 60% in the last six months.
The company saw a flurry of insider sales after this earnings report, which caused shares to rise more than 19% afterward. Total sales after earnings were $72 million, none of which came under 10b5-1 plans. Three separate insiders sold, but Chief Technology Officer Shay Banon was by far the largest source. Across Banon’s direct and indirect holdings, his position fell by more than 10%.
Combining ESTC’s strong recent performance, multiple insiders selling, and Banon’s sizable but not huge trim creates a mildly negative indicator for the stock.

The headline insider sale numbers across these three stocks look significantly worse at first glance than they do upon further examination. Among this group, further sales from Caterpillar’s CEO are most worth watching. In particular, if Creed sells shares that are not tied to option exercises, it would provide a stronger negative signal. Amid this, Wall Street analysts are expressing significant bullishness on CAT going forward. The MarketBeat consensus price target of $995 implies upside of about 20%.
