Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) recently received two fresh $250 price targets. It also has one famous short seller who thinks the stock is worth less than $1. Both camps are reading the same second-quarter report. They just reach opposite conclusions.
UBS analyst Karl Keirstead lifted his Palantir target to $250 from $220 on Sept. 15, keeping his Buy rating, after the company's Sept. 10 AIPCon11 event. DA Davidson had already moved to $250 from $200 while reaffirming its Buy, with the change following an AIPCon11 summit built around AI sovereignty themes.
Michael Burry sees a very different company. He's argued that Palantir's long-run intrinsic value sits below $1 per share, and he re-established his bearish position with March 2027 puts with strike prices in the low-to-mid $100s after previously covering part of his short. He recently announced that he had increased his short position in PLTR again, adding that the trades were made "in some size."
The gap between $1 and $250 is not a dispute about data. It's a dispute about what the data means. The bull case is changing shape. It's no longer about generic "artificial intelligence (AI) momentum." It now rests on a narrower idea: AI sovereignty.
Why "AI Momentum" Stopped Working
For much of 2026, the AI momentum story didn't move PLTR. Shares fell roughly 30% year-to-date, from about $177 at the start of 2026 to around $125 by Aug. 3. That slide happened despite the company delivering blockbuster earnings reports that showed, among other things, that revenue was compounding at a blistering pace.
When a stock falls on strong growth, the market is signaling fatigue with the story. Investors had priced in AI demand. They needed a reason to pay more for it. A new narrative was required.
Then the second quarter arrived. Revenue rose 92.8% to $1.935 billion, U.S. commercial revenue soared 149%, and Karp declared that demand for AI sovereignty had been unleashed. The stock gapped higher and hasn't looked back.
What "AI Sovereignty" Actually Claims
The thesis is simple. Enterprises don't want to hand their proprietary data to model providers.
Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella flagged the risk in a July 12 essay, warning that businesses "essentially pay for intelligence twice." Karp then went further, arguing that companies are paying model providers to absorb their IP and expertise.
DA Davidson's analyst sees Palantir benefiting by becoming the software layer that coordinates those choices. UBS makes a similar argument. Palantir's pitch is that its software runs on a customer's own infrastructure, while giving customers control over their data and security policies—a strong selling point for government, healthcare, and financial clients.
The evidence cited is real. Palantir posted $3.4 billion in quarterly bookings and a net dollar retention rate of 157%. Existing customers are spending meaningfully more, not just renewing.
New Argument or Rebrand?
The honest answer is both. The core product claim isn't new. Foundry and its ontology have long been sold on the promise that customers keep control of their data. What changed is the named adversary.
The old pitch positioned Palantir against messy legacy systems. The new pitch positions it against hyperscalers and model labs. That's genuinely different. Palantir becomes the neutral broker between enterprises and the models they rent.
It also changes what the bulls are actually betting on. "AI momentum" was a bet on the size of the market. "AI sovereignty" is a bet on where profits go. The second argument is narrower. It's also more falsifiable, which is a point in Palantir's favor.
But the rebrand element is hard to ignore. UBS started at $200 in June, moved to $220 in August, and landed at $250 in September. Targets rose in step with the share price. The $250 calls also sit about 28% above MarketBeat's $195 consensus. That doesn't make them wrong. It does mean the narrative is doing more of the valuation work than the models.
Burry Reads the Same Page Backward
Burry's case uses the same filings. He points to Palantir trading at roughly 103x sales, a March 2026 amendment that raised a major third-party cloud-services commitment from at least $1.95 billion to at least $5.6 billion, and what he sees as a large accounting gap tied to stock-based compensation.
The balance sheet adds texture. Accounts receivable climbed from nearly $1 billion at the end of 2025 to about $1.5 billion by June 2026, with one customer representing 27% of the total. Burry sees consulting industry-like risk in the business.
Here's the twist most coverage misses. The features Burry flags may be the sovereignty model's operating reality. Deploying on a customer's own infrastructure is hands-on work. Truist even cited Palantir's edge in recruiting elite forward-deployed engineers as a strength.
Custom deployment looks like a service. Services come with lumpier collections. The moat bulls praise, and the "consulting" label Burry applies could describe the same thing. Which reading wins depends on one question: does that hands-on work compound into software-like margins?
So far, the cash says yes. Adjusted free cash flow hit $1.22 billion in the quarter, a 63% margin. That is not what a struggling consultancy produces. It's worth noting, too, that Burry's 2026 positions come from his own voluntary newsletter disclosures, not regulatory filings.
The Re-Rating of PLTR Is Underway
The Palantir analyst forecasts on MarketBeat have a consensus price target of $195.33 for PLTR.
After months of being 20% to 30% below that price target, PLTR is near consensus.
That's why recent analysts' revisions carry more weight.
When a stock reaches consensus, analysts may reassess whether their existing ratings and targets still reflect their outlook. So far, the trend is bullish.
Palantir won't report its Q3 2026 earnings until early November. But, unlike in many other cycles, this time investors aren't waiting for the numbers; they're actively getting in front of them. That report will test the metrics that matter most: net dollar retention, receivables, and those infrastructure commitments.
Here's why investors shouldn't dismiss the opinion of analysts. Although PLTR is up approximately 6.7% in the 30 days ending Sept. 23, the stock is still underperforming the S&P 500 year to date. Simply catching up to the index implies some upside. That upside gets even larger for investors who believe that Palantir deserves a premium.
Palantir CEO Alex Karp certainly does and reiterated his belief that PLTR is undervalued in an interview on CNBC, and that he expects Palantir to generate $15 billion to $18 billion in free cash flow within two years. It seems that even as concerns about AI continue to mount, investors have decided PLTR is a winning horse.
